Today's Story Highlights

A Hacker by Any Other Name Might Have Escaped Data Seizure
The United States District Court for the District of Idaho has ordered
the seizure of data from the computers of white hat hacking firm South
Fork Security in response to a lawsuit brought by Battelle. Battelle
alleges Southfork's cofounder, Corey Thuen, copied an application called
"Sophia" that he helped develop while working at Battelle, and then
planned to sell it as an open source product.

Neurio Turns Your House Into a Learning Home
Many of us are about to face higher winter heating bills this winter.
Some suppliers, like the predominant British Gas in the UK, are raising
prices by up to 8 percent. The U.S. Energy Information Administration,
meanwhile, reckons on a staggering 13 percent increase this year for
those using mainly natural gas to heat homes in the U.S. There's not
much one can do about it. We need heat.

Germany Cries Foul Over Merkel Phone Tapping
German Chancellor Angela Merkel called President Obama to protest after
she received information that U.S. intelligence was perhaps spying on
her mobile phone. Obama assured Merkel that the U.S. "is not monitoring
and will not monitor" her communications, but the White House reportedly
stopped short of denying that it had done so in the past.

iPhone Teaches Mac a Thing or Two
The Mac came first, but the iPhone and iPad are what rocketed Apple to
the top of the consumer technology mountain. The thing is, while the
iPhone is a great phone, the head-scratching success of Apple's mobile
device sales is only partially due to the hardware and OS itself.
Apple's success is all about how well Apple creates, connects and
distributes its entire hardware and software ecosystem.

Linux Lite Is Heavy on Features and Usability
In a computing world distracted by distro overload, Linux Lite is a
lightweight Linux OS that has no trouble handling a heavy workload. Long
gone are the days when it took hours to install and set up Linux on a
computer, but most Linux distros still need a bit of configuration
to adjust the massive desktop options to your liking.

NIST Forges Ahead With Critical Infrastructure Security Plan
The National Institute of Standards and Technology on Wednesday released
a preliminary cybersecurity framework for improving the cybersecurity of
the United States' critical infrastructure. The Institute will soon open
a 45-day public comment period on the framework, seeking input from
reviewers on a series of questions. The dates will be announced in the
Federal Register .

Tungsten Discs Could Function as Million-Year Time Capsules
Jeroen de Vries, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Twente, has
developed a prototype storage system that might last for up to 1 million
years. This might be needed if the planet were devastated by a natural
disaster, or as a reference for future intelligent life on Earth -- or
for visiting aliens. "You must then think about archival storage of
between 1 million and 1 billion years," he said.
