Babies and toddlers take to tablets

Posted: 19 Jun 2015 06:43 AM PDT

Babies and toddlers using tablets - University of IowaA paper from researchers at the University of Iowa (UI) has revealed that by the age of two, ninety percent of toddlers are able to use a tablet.

And, perhaps more impressively, or depressingly according to your view, over 50 percent of infants aged between 12 to 17 months had a "moderate ability" to use tablets.

The researchers said the purpose of their research was to see how the babies were using tablets by analysing YouTube videos.

Infants and toddlers are using iPads and devices and it's happened very fast, said Juan Pablo Hourcade, an associate professor at UI.

He said when children are over a year old, they switch from using both hands and all their fingers to manipulate tablets, like grown ups do.

He believes there could be opportunities for people to develop apps to help interactive education for toddlers and infants.

The researchers did not speculate on the effect using tablets at these tender ages might have on minds of the future candidates for adulthood.

European flagA report issued by the European Commission (EC) said that nearly eight out 10 households in the European Union had access to 4G LTE broadband at the end of last year.

The EC report said that next generation access (NGA) broadband was now available to 68.1 percent of EU homes, meaning that there were 15.5 million households using 30Mbps or greater broadband compared to last year.

Fixed broadband coverage was flat at 97 percent, indicating that member states are now focusing more on mobile tech and NGA.

And there is better news for people in the EU living in rural communities, with NGA coverage growing from 18.1 percent in 2013 to 25.1 percent last year.

The standout countries in Europe are Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden – they have 99 percent LTE coverage. The Czech Republic and Malta also saw considerable growth in 2014. Malta had no coverage in 2013 but 67 percent of people there have access to LTE now.

Fibre to the front door – which gives very fast broadband connections – was available in the European Union to 18.7 percent of households. Lithuania and Latvia are leading the rest of the states.

Apple watchGiant Taiwanese original design manufacturer (ODM) Quanta doesn't see sales of notebooks in 2015 being anything other than flat.

Quanta is one of three or four manufacturers who build notebooks for the so-called "white box" market and for multinationals which rebrand them under their own name.

Recently, Quanta has diversified into selling X86 servers direct to large companies building data centres.

But, according to a report in the Taipei Times, while business is brisk in some sectors, it will ship the same number of notebooks this year but they'll be low priced notebooks rather than margin rich high end machines.

Quanta's other business lines including making watches and 12-inch Macbooks for Cupertino-based outfit Apple.

It is investigating making wearable tech but is also diversifying into other sectors including the internet of things and cloud computing technologies, as well as the automotive sector.
