When is private cloud cheaper than public cloud?
A group of companies that sell products to build private clouds has determined a price at which it claims it is less expensive to operate a private cloud compared to using Amazon Web Service's IaaS public cloud. A report from the vendors - which include a collocation provider, a cloud management vendor and a network operator - attempts to address a question many organizations may be considering: When is it better to use a public cloud versus a managed hosting or collocation environment? The case study finds that if an organization is spending more than $7,644 in Amazon's cloud each month, then it can be cheaper to operate a private cloud. But analysts say it's difficult to put an exact dollar figure on when a private cloud will be more cost effective than a public cloud; there are just too many factors to consider, says IDC analyst Melanie Posey. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

CIOs share must-have cloud skills
As the clouds roll in, IT organizations are recasting their tech talent requirements. "You don't need people to build servers anymore. You need somebody good at managing another organization responsible for doing that. That's a different skill," says Josh Jewett, CIO at Family Dollar. "You go from managing outcomes yourselves to managing outcomes through others." Jewett is one of 16 CIOs who spoke to us about the move to cloud computing. A key topic of discussion was how to cultivate cloud-ready talent. On the skills front, CIOs are in agreement that companies need to reexamine the traditional roles and capabilities in their IT shops to be successful in the cloud. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

What giant companies WON'T put in the cloud
In our interviews with CIOs at large enterprises, we found that adoption levels vary from simple experimentation to heavy use of cloud apps and infrastructure in public and private settings. Yet even among the most cloud-focused businesses, there are resources CIOs won't consider migrating to the cloud – at least not yet. Certain tactical capabilities can easily be acquired in the public cloud, but not everything falls into that category. Some enterprise systems aren't ready to be run in the public cloud because of safety and reliability concerns, says Joe Spagnoletti, CIO at Campbell Soup. SAP looks to long-time ally IBM for help expanding in the cloud
SAP's Hana Enterprise Cloud service will be made available through IBM's global cloud infrastructure, in a move that expands options for customers around the world who are considering moving their business applications off-premises to the cloud. The deal will give SAP access to a total of 60 data centers between its own and IBM's, said Kevin Ichhpurani, senior vice president and head of Business Development and Strategic Ecosystem at SAP. Revelations over the past year or so about domestic surveillance by U.S. intelligence agencies have raised concerns over data sovereignty and data privacy among global enterprises. The arrangement with IBM gives SAP much greater ability to meet those concerns, which have been especially high among customers in Europe and parts of Asia, Ichhpurani said.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Telco Systems lays groundwork for fewer management worries with virtual routers, firewalls
Hosted service vendor Telco Systems is hoping to make it easier for businesses to buy cloud-based routers and firewalls, but the company first has to convince service providers it's a good idea. Virtualization has already changed how enterprises build and manage their IT infrastructure, and now mobile operators are looking at doing the same thing, and vendors are re-architecting their products. Two areas that are ripe for moving from hardware to hosted environments are security and network equipment, according to telecom vendor Telco Systems. The purported advantages to businesses are the same as with other cloud-based services. IT departments at businesses of all sizes won't in this case have to install and manage routers and firewalls, an increasingly complicated task as both product categories are becoming more advanced. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

13 tips to achieve cloud success
We interviewed 16 CIOs and IT leaders about their public and private cloud deployments, usage trends, skills requirements, lingering obstacles and future plans. Here are some nuggets of advice from these cloud giants. 1. Don't get too caught up in cost savings. "If you make it a money thing, you're making a mistake," says Joe Spagnoletti, CIO at Campbell Soup. "It's an option to deliver capability. You have to get it at the cost commensurate with the capability. You can't do it for cost savings or management efficiency."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
