When Film Distribution Fails, Piracy Wins (22:24)
Last month, researchers at George Mason University's Mercatus Center
launched a website, PiracyData.org, to determine whether or not there
are legal alternatives for viewing the world's most pirated movies. The
researchers will quantify the validity -- or invalidity -- of copyright
holders' claims that pirates are thieving material that is indeed
available elsewhere.

Today's Story Highlights

Model S Burns, Tesla Stock Goes Up in Smoke
The third fire in five weeks in one of Tesla Motor's Model S cars could
prompt safety regulators to take a closer look at the electric vehicle.
The blaze reportedly occurred when a driver hit a trailer hitch on a
highway near Murfreesboro, Tenn. The collision damaged the undercarriage
and started the fire. The driver, who pulled the car to the side of the
road, was uninjured.

Devs Bright-Eyed and Bushy-Tailed for Glass Hackathon
Google has invited developers to a hackathon that will give them a
chance to learn more about the Google Glass platform. The company sent
invitations on Wednesday to an event scheduled for Nov. 19 and 20 at
Google's San Francisco Basecamp, where eager developers will hear about
the next phase of the Glass Developer Platform. Google will be reaching
out to more developers in the coming months.

North Korea Gets Its Hands on Electromagnetic Pulse Weaponry
North Korea is developing electromagnetic pulse weapons designed to
disable enemy electronics, according to South Korea's National
Intelligence Service. North Korea reportedly purchased EMP technology
from Russia and is now in the process of replicating it. Some American
politicians, including Republicans Newt Gingrich and Rep. Trent Franks,
have issued dire warnings about EMP technology.

All Things Appy: Top 5 iOS Apps for Musicians
Apple was one of the forerunners in bringing the power of music
production to the masses. Recording and music-making gear that used to
cost tens of thousands of dollars and occupy dedicated studios first
shrank to home-studio-capable sizes when powered by Apple computers in
the 80s, and now it can be found on a smartphone or an iPad. While much
smartphone music-making isn't free, there are some free apps out there.

Apple May Be Getting 'Repair, Don't Replace' Religion
Common repairs for its latest iPhone models, including display
replacement, reportedly will soon be performed in Apple's retail stores.
Apple already performs some iPhone repairs at its stores, but the new
program would cover a host of components, including displays, volume
buttons, vibrating motors, speaker systems, rear-facing camera and home
buttons.

Silent Text: Basic Anonymity at a Hefty Price
The Tibetan government, law firms in Thailand and human rights groups in
Sudan are all using a relatively new encrypted communications tool --
one that fits easily, if not cheaply, onto your smartphone. Silent
Circle is an encrypted voice, video, text and file-transfer protocol
that's available in app forms for Android devices, among others.

French Ruling Puts Google Between a Rock and an Orgy
A French court has ruled that Google must automatically block links to
nine images of Max Mosley participating in an orgy. Mosley is the former
president of the International Automobile Federation. The company must
find a way to prevent all links to the images from appearing in its
image search results for a period of five years. The order takes effect
two months after the ruling.
