When Film Distribution Fails, Piracy Wins (22:24)
Last month, researchers at George Mason University's Mercatus Center
launched a website, PiracyData.org, to determine whether or not there
are legal alternatives for viewing the world's most pirated movies. The
researchers will quantify the validity -- or invalidity -- of copyright
holders' claims that pirates are thieving material that is indeed
available elsewhere.

Today's Story Highlights

Niantic Opens Ingress to AR Gamers Hot to Trot for Exotic Matter
Google's Niantic Labs on Monday announced that it was lifting the
invitation-only restriction on its augmented reality game Ingress. The
game launched in beta about a year ago, and interested players needed an
invitation code to participate. Now all Android users can download the
free massively multiplayer game from Google Play. The game will
officially exit beta status on Dec. 14.

BiiSafe Buddy Puts Caution on Your Side
We've looked at personal tracking products before, including stolen-
phone locators and a breadcrumb-tracking, mugging-alarm combo for
Google's Android mobile operating system. Where some of these kinds of
products have disappointed is that they have needed daily user
intervention. The personal attack alarm required turning on before
entering crime-infested neighborhoods, for example.

Tesco Goes TSA on Shoppers to Grab Marketing Data
Tesco, a UK-based supermarket giant, is installing hundreds of screens
that will scan shoppers' faces while they wait in line at its gas
stations. The information gathered from the shoppers will then be dished
to advertisers. Tesco struck a deal with Amscreen, which makes
OptimEyes, a system that works by using a camera and TV-style screen.

igHome Offers Cozy Abode for iGoogle Orphans
Google birthed its personal portal software, iGoogle, during simpler
Internet times. Online applications were few. Clamshell handsets were
all the rage. Combining "social" and "media" was an oxymoron. The portal
wars began. Online titans like Yahoo, Microsoft and Google vied for
eyeballs and the mantle of most visited Internet destination. Personal
portals emerged from that competition.

HGST's New Hard-Drive Isn't Full of Hot Air
Western Digital subsidiary HGST has found a novel way of packing more
storage capacity into a standard 3.5-inch hard disc drive: filling it
with helium instead of air. The 6-TB Ultrastar He6 HDD is the highest-
capacity drive in the world, according to the company. HGST has achieved
this by packing seven disk platters into the drive instead of the
standard five.
