When Film Distribution Fails, Piracy Wins (22:24)
Last month, researchers at George Mason University's Mercatus Center
launched a website, PiracyData.org, to determine whether or not there
are legal alternatives for viewing the world's most pirated movies. The
researchers will quantify the validity -- or invalidity -- of copyright
holders' claims that pirates are thieving material that is indeed
available elsewhere.

Today's Story Highlights
The Deadly Side of Social Media
My perception of social media changed a lot last week. I went from
thinking of it as a sometimes helpful annoyance to a deadly hazard run
by criminally negligent executives. Nearly getting kicked to death as a
result of a Facebook post will do that to a person. What happened was
pretty nasty and could have been lethal, so I've spent some time
thinking through what I did wrong.

IE Gets Top Props for Thwarting Socially Engineered Malware
By duping an Internet innocent into making just one errant click, an
online bandit can inflict a world of hurt. Socially engineered malware
attacks attempt to deceive a user into downloading malicious software,
typically through a link to an infected website. The best protections
against those attacks are built into Microsoft's Internet Explorer,
according to NSS Labs.

Discharged Female Cadet Sues Aussie Gov't for Sexual Harassment
An Australian woman formerly in the Australian Defense Force said that
she plans to sue the nation's federal government for grievances stemming
from a sordid saga in which a fellow cadet filmed the two of them having
sex and then streamed it via Skype. The woman, known in the media as
"Kate," said she will file suit against the defense department in the
Australian Human Rights Commission.

Ode to Project Ara
Ever since Burger King hit the proverbial nail on the head with its
famed "Have It Your Way" slogan back in 1974, everyone has known that
people like to -- well, have it their own way. Customization has been a
growing trend, but until recently, smartphones were a glaring exception.
Linux Girl can no longer even count the number of times she's asked for
a big "L" and an image of Tux emblazoned on her device.

Stop Motion Studio Brings Out the LEGO Moviemaking Geek in All of Us
Stop Motion Studio is an app that lets you take photos and string them
together to create a stop-motion video. It's super easy, and the results
are naturally sort of dorky in an undeniably fun way. The app is free,
but before I pulled the trigger on the in-app extras, I saw Stop Motion
Studio Pro for $4.99. I promptly deleted the free version and bought the
paid Pro version.
