The 75,000 words you'll have to climb to reach the top of that mountain are just a part of the story, however. Long before page one is written comes the plotting, characters, locations and more needed to make good fiction come alive. After the book is done there's the trip down the other side of that mountain, with multiple drafts, pitches, submission tracking and the endless edits that come with commercial publication.
Mighty though it may be, Microsoft Word is out of its league keeping track of all these various elements in any cohesive way. Fortunately, you don't have to rely on index cards, artist's tape, and a blank wall to keep a handle on your fiction. There are tools that can help you with these tasks each step of the way, from a story that's just a glimmer in your eye to residual payments sitting in the mailbox.
