There is a huge concern that someone who has pitched an idea to you that you independently came up with internally will successfully sue you for swiping the idea. So even though history shows that more ideas come from outside, the big firms are designed not to let ideas in -- and breakthroughs like the iPod and Kinect are incredibly unusual, even though historically they are more successful.
