AMD declares all out war on Nvidia

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 02:16 AM PDT

Yesterday, October 23, 2013 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of Nvidia was suddenly and deliberately attacked by GPU and FUD forces of the Empire of AMD.

Nvidia was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of AMD, was still in conversation with its management and its Emperor Raja Koduri looking toward the maintenance of peace in the high-end GPU market.

Indeed, one hour after AMD GCN squadrons had commenced bombing in the Nvidian island of Kepler, the AMDese Ambassador to Nvidia and his colleague delivered to our CEO a formal reply to a recent Nvidian message. And, while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of price war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from AMD’s homeland makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the AMD management has deliberately sought to deceive Nvidia by false statements, benchmarks, prices and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday of Volcanic Islands has caused severe damage to Nvidia’s high-end and ultra-high-end forces. I regret to tell you that very many Nvidian sales and margins have been lost. In addition, Nvidian flagships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the AMDese Government also launched an attack against our AIBs.
Last night AMDese forces attacked Titan.
Last night AMDese forces attacked Kepler.
Last night AMDese forces attacked the GK110.
Last night the AMDese attacked our margins.
And this morning the AMDese attacked the GTX 780.

AMD has therefore undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the high-end area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of Nvidia have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our business model.

As Chief Executive Officer of Nvidia I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense, that always will our whole company remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the Nvidian people, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Board and of the fanboys when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our sales, our AIBs and our margins are in grave danger.

With confidence in our GPU designers, with the unbounding determination of our marketing team, we will gain the inevitable triumph. So help us DirectX.

I ask that the Board declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by AMD on Thursday, October 23, 2013, a state of war has existed between Nvidia and the AMDese Empire.

Moaning Merkel enters mobile madness

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 02:13 AM PDT

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has complained to President Barack Obama after learning that US intelligence may have targeted her mobile phone.

According to the Miami Herald, she told the president that it would be "a serious breach of trust" if the claims were true.

Obama said that US is not listening in on Merkel's phone calls now but failed to say that it had not done so in the past.

A White House spokesman sort of implied that the US ruled the world now and if it had not been for them, the Germans would be speaking German.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said that the United States greatly values its close cooperation with Germany on a broad range of shared security challenges. We guess he was referring to them both needing to know Merkel's password.

German news magazine Der Spiegel, which has published material from NSA leaker Edward Snowden, found proof that the US hacked Merkel's mobile.

Merkel said among close partners such as Germany and the US, "there must not be such surveillance of a head of government's communication".

The White House is conducting a review about how it gathers intelligence after it became clear that it seemed to be spending rather a lot of dosh snooping on people who were its friends, rather than enemies. France and Brazil have also made similar complaints.

As details of National Security Agency spying programs have become public, citizens, activists and politicians in countries from Latin America to Europe have lined up to express shock and outrage at the scope of Washington's spying.

The French were particularly miffed after a Paris newspaper reported the NSA had swept up 70.3 million French telephone records in a 30-day period.

Woz is not buying the new iPad

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 02:11 AM PDT

Gadget mad Apple co-founder and all round nice bloke Steve Wozniak said he is not buying Apple's new iPad Air.

According to Business Insider, Woz is always looking at gadgets, but he really could not see anything he needed when it came to the iPad Air.

He said that the killer thing that was missing was that the Air did not have enough storage.

He said that he does not have broadband at home, and can't get great broadband connections in hotels. This means that all Woz's favourite tunes and episodes of Big Bank Theory are stored on his iPad.

Woz said that he was hoping Apple would make a 256GB iPad so he could put every episode of Big Bang Theory on it. He emailed Mrs Woz and  she said he didn't want one.

We expect to see Woz attacked by the provisional wing of the Apple cult for not staying true to Jobs' vision of buying everything the company makes even if it is not useful.

Perlmutter leaves Intel

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 02:10 AM PDT

The bloke who was the chief chip architect of the Intel universe is going to clean out his desk in February and do something different with his time.

David Perlmutter, an executive vice president ran Intel;s chip-architecture unit and has been at Intel for almost 34 years.

According to Intel he is leaving to "pursue other opportunities". But it might be that Perlmutter was not happy with his changing role at the fashion bag maker.

Perlmutter shifted roles in May, when the Architecture Group began reporting to Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich.  Perlmutter was one of the names tipped to be the new Intel CEO but sadly his uncanny resemblance to a young  Geoffrey Howe lead him to a similar sidelined role instead.

Krzanich is trying to speed up Intel's efforts in mobile devices. Intel said that throughout his career at Intel, Perlmutter led many of the product, technology and business transformations at Intel. It just looks like he will not be leading this particular change.

Torvalds gives the thumbs up to SteamOS

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 02:09 AM PDT

Linus Torvalds has given his approval to Valve's Linux-based platform, SteamOS, and said it could boost Linux on desktops.

According to PC Pro, Torvalds praised Valve's "vision" and suggested it could lead to game developers ditching Windows and taking Linux seriously.

Speaking at LinuxCon in Edinburgh, Torvalds said that he loved the Steam announcements because it was a an opportunity to really help Linux get onto the desktop.

Valve will make the system available to manufacturers to use on their own hardware.

If the SteamOS gain traction among gamers and developers, hardware manufacturers will have to extend driver support beyond Windows.

Torvalds has been having a long running spat with Nvidia for failing to support open-source driver development for its graphics chips. However with SteamOS is on the way, Nvidia has opened up to the Linux community, something Torvalds predicts is a sign of things to come.

He said that it will force different distributors to realise if this is how Steam is going, they need to do the same thing because they can't afford to be different in this respect. They want people to play games on their platform too.

One of the reasons Linux hasn't done well on the desktop, according to Torvalds, is because developers focus on useless features.

He said that the desktop Linux lot wasted too much time in-fighting about making the login screen look really nice.

Google spends the most on lobbying

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 02:07 AM PDT

According to figures just in, the search engine Google is spending the most on scmoozing US politicans.

Consumer Watchdog added up the efforts of tech-companies to lobby politicans and used data from disclosure forms filed with the Clerk of the House of Representatives.

Google actually cut its spending on lobbyists, but still spent $3.4 million during the third quarter. This is nearly three times what Facebook spent during the same period.

Google outpaced Verizon which spent $3.04 million, Verizon Wireless, $1.2 million and AT&T, $4.3 million.

Facebook's spending on lobbying rose 47 percent between 2012 and 2013, from $980,000 during the third quarter of 2012 to 1.4 million during 2013.

Microsoft also boosted its spending by 20 percent, from $1.9 million in 2012 to $2.2 million during the third quarter of this year.

Another group which has decided that it needs to grease a few palms is Apple whose lobbying efforts shot up 111 percent between the third quarter of 2012 and 2013. However it did not spend that much something like $970,000 this year. Cisco Systems spent $890,000, IBM $1.18 million, Intel $980,000 and Oracle spent $1.36 million.

Google is not the biggest buyer of political influence. The US Chamber of Commerce has spent $35.9 million so far and the National Association of Realtors who wrote a cheque for $17.7 million.
