billion in sales. Grand Theft Auto V did just that, however, eclipsing
the 10-figure mark three days after its Sept. 17 release. The game's
success is an emphatic declaration that the GTA brand -- first

Galileo Gives Gadget Makers Great Power
Intel on Thursday announced Galileo, a microcontroller development board
made jointly with open source hardware company Arduino for the education
and maker markets. Based on Intel's recently announced Quark system on a
chip, the Galileo board will be available by the end of November for
less than $60, said Intel spokesperson Kari Aakre.

NSA Succumbs to Government Shutdown
Employees at the National Security Agency received a memo telling them
that they, too, would not work because of the government shutdown taking
place as Congress does whatever it is Congress is doing -- or not doing
-- right now. In the memo, employees are told that despite exceptions
made for "activities required for national security," they would be
furloughed.

HarperCollins Fattens Scribd's E-Book Subscription Catalog
Scribd announced Tuesday that HarperCollins has become the first major
publisher to join its monthly e-book subscription service. Scribd
launched the e-book service earlier this year with a handful of smaller
publishers. It allows users unlimited access to Scribd's library of more
than 25 million books and documents, as well as most of the
HarperCollins backlist catalog, for $8.99 per month.
