The Secrets of GTA's Massive Mainstream Success (20:53)
It's not every day that a video game becomes a mainstream tech story.
Then again, it's not every day that a video game promptly records $1
billion in sales. Grand Theft Auto V did just that, however, eclipsing
the 10-figure mark three days after its Sept. 17 release. The game's
success is an emphatic declaration that the GTA brand -- first
introduced in 1997 -- is still going strong.

Today's Story Highlights

Amazon May Have 2 Smartphones Up Its Sleeve
It's been rumored for some time that Amazon was working on a smartphone
project known as "Project B," but this week new details emerged that
could offer a closer look. Specifically, the company is reportedly in
the process of developing two handsets aimed at different ends of the
market. One device will be an inexpensive model due for release this
year.

Dell Whisks the Wraps Off New Tablets, Laptops
Dell on Wednesday released new tablets and updates to its XPS line of
laptops for geeks, less than three weeks after founder Michael Dell won
a long and bitter battle to take the company private again. The company
launched two Windows 8.1 tablets and two Android tablets under the
revived "Venue" name. It also unveiled the XPS 11, XPS 13 and XPS 15
laptops.

Fitbit Uses 'Force' With Flex Follow-Up Device
Fitbit only just released its first fitness-tracking wristband back in
May, but the company is reportedly getting close to rolling out the next
generation. Dubbed "Force," this new device will apparently be both
smaller and more capable than the current Flex. Among several new
features expected in the upcoming device are a built-in altimeter and
watch functionality.

How to Avoid Excessive Phone Charges When Traveling in Europe
If you've been stung by roaming charges in the past when using a U.S.
cellphone abroad and you've recently heard about new, supposedly fair
roaming caps in Europe, beware: It's not what it seems. As of July 2013,
European-carrier SIM card roaming rates are capped in Europe at 0.45
euros, or about $0.60, per megabyte for data and 0.24 euros, or about
$0.32, for one minute of voice.

Apple's Sneak Attack on Gaming Is Now in Play
Apple let a silly game demonstration take center stage at WWDC in June,
and it released a new framework with instructions on how developers
could build physical game controllers. The two together led me to
believe that an Apple sneak attack on living room gaming was imminent.
Since then, two more elements have risen to the surface, and now I think
the sneak attack is well under way.

Kdenlive Delivers Near-Pro Video Editing
Kdenlive is a multitrack, nonlinear video-editing suite packed with some
of the most recent video technologies. This application can be a great
tool if you have serious video work to do, but you need to fully test it
before attempting any mission-critical editing tasks. Kdenlive takes
some effort to learn. That's especially the case if you have little
experience with other video-editing software.

Game Like It's 1995 With Web-Based Hover
There's little doubt Microsoft has its gaming sights set primarily on
the future with the approaching launch of its next generation Xbox One
video game console next month, but on Wednesday the company took an old
school turn and launched an updated version of the classic Windows 95
game Hover. Hover originally arrived as an Easter Egg -- a hidden piece
of software -- in Windows 95 installation CD-ROMs.

iOS 7: Here a Bug, There a Bug, Everywhere a Bug, Bug
Apple reportedly has pledged to fix a bug in iOS 7 that has been
plaguing some users. This will be the second fix since the iOS 7 was
released Sept. 18. The first was issued Sept. 20 to resolve a problem
with the iPhone 5s fingerprint scanner. At least 16 iOS 7 problems have
surfaced so far, including a bug that lets anyone bypass the iPhone's
lockscreen.
