Today's Story Highlights
Motorola Launches 'Have It Your Way' Smartphone Project
Motorola's making a big splash with the launch of Project Ara, an
ambitious, open source hardware initiative that allows consumers to
customize their entire phone, down to the specific components and
display. Ara's approach centers around an endoskeleton, or "endo," that
is the core frame holding the other components together. Consumers will
be able to swap modules however they like.

Tobacco Firm Burned for Running Ad in Kids' App
British American Tobacco issued an apology after an ad for its e-
cigarette brand, Vype, popped up in an iPad app for children. The Vype
banner appeared inside the "My Dog My Style HD" game and was spotted by
author and educator Graham Brown-Martin, who took to Twitter with a
screenshot of the kiddy cig advertisement. British American Tobacco
pulled its online advertising for Vype and issued an apology.

The IF Convertible: 3 Devices, 1 Data Plan
Back in 2011, in the dark, pre-tablet days of the netbook, Motorola
introduced a phone and laptop combo called the "Atrix." The then-
powerful 4G, dual-core AT&T phone slotted into a unique receptacle on
the back of the optional laptop's clamshell hinge -- a bit like a game
cartridge slides into a console. The phone then powered the Chromebook-
like, highly stripped-down laptop.

Hacker Madness Strikes Idaho Judge
A federal judge in Idaho appears to have had a fit of hacker madness. In
a case involving a former employee and his bosses over software for
protecting the nation's critical infrastructure from cyberattacks,
federal district court Judge B. Lynn Winmill found that Corey Thuen's
privacy rights could be ignored because he was a self-proclaimed hacker.

Mavericks Can Be Fountain of Youth for Old Macs
As someone with a reluctance to upgrade his hardware as often as Apple
would appreciate, two aspects of OS X 10.9 Mavericks immediately caught
my attention: its memory management and its battery-life enhancements.
Mavericks makes a number of changes in power management that improve
battery life substantially -- even on my old 2009 13-inch MacBook Air.

LG Introduces Caressable Smartphone
LG has swung into the curved smartphone market with the launch of its LG
G Flex. Surfacing on the heels of Samsung's Galaxy Round, which curves
horizontally, the LG G Flex curves vertically; the shape is optimized
for the average face. The design apparently boosts voice and sound
quality while improving grip. The G Flex is the first smartphone with a
self-healing coating on the back, LG claimed.
