The Winter Olympics of Russia's Discontent (19:11)
The 1980 games "were quite interesting because Moscow was completely
cleaned up from any people who were deemed by the security services
potentially dangerous. All troublemakers or would-be troublemakers were
simply expelled from Moscow for the Olympic Games ... . People inside
the Russian secret services still think that this approach was very
effective, and we need to do something similar."

Today's Story Highlights
Facebook Gives Teens a Longer Leash
Facebook on Thursday made two seemingly contradictory changes to its
settings for teen users. On one hand, it narrowed the audience that can
see teens' posts by default; at the same time, however, it made it
possible for the first time for teens to open up their posts to the
public at large. Until now, the default audience for posts made by kids
aged 13 through 17 was "friends of friends."

Test Your Phone's Mettle With Benchmark & Tuning
Here's a novel way to find out if you do indeed need a new phone. It's a
benchmarking app that will test components and provide a comparison with
crowdsourced benchmarks from other common devices out there. If your
two-year-old, or so, phone or tablet seems a bit sluggish compared with
the speed at which your colleagues and friends whizz through their
smartphone-related tasks, it probably is.

Adidas Trots Out Smartwatch for Runners
Adidas on Wednesday introduced the miCoach Smart Run, its new fitness-
based smartwatch for runners, just a day after rival Nike introduced the
latest update to its own Nike+ Fuelband SE tracker. Fjord collaborated
with Adidas on the design. Paul Gaudio, vice president of Adidas
Interactive, demonstrated the new fitness tracker at the GigaOM Mobile
2013 conference in San Francisco.

Apple's Court-Appointed Watchdog May Not Have Much Bite
The federal district court judge who found Apple guilty of violating
U.S. antitrust laws has appointed a watchdog to make sure it toes the
legal line in its dealings with e-book publishers. Judge Denise Cote has
appointed Michael Bromwich -- a high-profile Washington, D.C., attorney
who focuses on internal investigations -- to supervise a court-ordered
antitrust compliance training program.
