The Winter Olympics of Russia's Discontent (19:11)
The 1980 games "were quite interesting because Moscow was completely
cleaned up from any people who were deemed by the security services
potentially dangerous. All troublemakers or would-be troublemakers were
simply expelled from Moscow for the Olympic Games ... . People inside
the Russian secret services still think that this approach was very
effective, and we need to do something similar."

Today's Story Highlights
Swartz's Whistleblower Protection Scheme to Carry On
The Freedom of the Press Foundation said Tuesday that it would be taking
charge of Aaron Swartz's DeadDrop project to protect whistleblowers
leaking confidential documents to journalists. FPF will provide in-site
installation of the technology, renamed "SecureDrop," as well as support
for news organizations that want to securely receive confidential
documents.

5c Wobbles in Apple's iPhone Balancing Act
Apple has slashed orders to suppliers for the iPhone 5c and parts for
the device, just three weeks after its debut. Apple claimed 9 million 5c
and 5s iPhones were ordered in the first three days following their
release Sept. 10, but it declined to break down the figures. The
consensus among analysts was that the 5s was outselling the 5c by a
considerable margin.

castAR Makes the World Your 3D Playground
Do you remember the scene in an early Star Wars movie where R2-D2 and
Chewbacca played a holographically generated, Jedi 3D board game while
killing time in their light freighter? Full-color, three-dimensional
game pieces were projected onto the board. Chewbacca wasn't a
particularly good loser, and R2-DR2 blipped and beeped a lot.

Apple's Oct. 22 Invites Kick Rumor Mill Into High Gear
Apple on Tuesday sent out invitations to an undisclosed event to be held
Oct. 22 in San Francisco, fueling fresh speculation about the company's
planned product launches. It's widely expected that Apple will unveil
new versions of the iPad and iPad mini. "The most solid rumors are that
we'll see a 9.7-inch fifth-generation iPad," suggested Jeff Orr, a
senior practice director at ABI Research.

Linux Gaming Is Cleared for Takeoff
Close to a third of all websites use Linux, according to W3Techs, and
Linux system users are arguably second only to Mac users in their
devotion to their platform of choice, yet Linux gamers have
traditionally been the red-headed stepchildren of the gaming community.
Xbox 360 was the top-selling console for the 32nd straight month in
August, NPD's video games sales figures indicate.

NSA Helps Itself to Americans' Online Address Books
The latest revelations by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward
Snowden show the NSA is spying on Americans, despite repeated government
assurances that it does not do so. The agency reportedly is collecting
hundreds of millions of electronic address books and contact lists from
people worldwide. Though it is collecting the data overseas, some of it
comes from Americans.
