The Winter Olympics of Russia's Discontent (19:11)
The 1980 games "were quite interesting because Moscow was completely
cleaned up from any people who were deemed by the security services
potentially dangerous. All troublemakers or would-be troublemakers were
simply expelled from Moscow for the Olympic Games ... . People inside
the Russian secret services still think that this approach was very
effective, and we need to do something similar."

Today's Story Highlights
HTC One's Big Brother Shows Up
HTC on Monday announced the HTC One Max, a supersized version of its
flagship HTC One Android device. It sports a 5.9-inch full HD 1080p
touchscreen, a fingerprint-scan feature, and an upgrade to HTC's Sense
skin -- Sense 5.5 -- among other things. "At this size, it appears
they're breaking into the phablet market," said tech analyst Rob
Enderle. "They need to do something."

British Retailer Takes Site Offline to Clear Out Disgusting E-Books
British retailer WH Smith has shuttered its UK site and will keep it
offline until all particularly objectionable sexual content is removed
from its offerings. Last week, technology news site The Kernel reported
that WH Smith -- along with Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other retailers
-- was selling pornographic e-books, including titles that featured
rape, incest and bestiality.

Microsoft to Give Phablets a Chance
Microsoft on Monday announced its third update to Windows Phone 8. It
will support bigger, higher-resolution screens, paving the way for
WinPho 8 devices with 5- and 6-inch 1080p HD touchscreens that will have
six Live Tiles across instead of four. There will also be a host of new
features. Simultaneously, Microsoft has launched the Windows Phone
Preview for developers.

iPhone 5c May Flourish Despite Slow Start
Apple's latest version of its flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5s, is
outselling the company's mid-tier iPhone 5c at a rate of two to one,
according to statistics from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.
Apple's simultaneous launch of two iPhone models was a first for the
company, so there was no basis for gauging consumer reactions. It now
appears the 5s is far more popular.

Insecurity and the Internet of Things, Part 1: Data, Data Everywhere
The Internet is actualizing the vision of a global village today. Cars
are becoming infotainment centers with online connections; printers,
home appliances and even door locks are being connected to the Internet;
and some cities have begun putting in hundreds of sensors to help them
better manage their buildings and utilities. The world is fast becoming
interconnected, in other words.

Nabbing 'Paunch' Puts Blackhole Hackers on Data Diet
When Russian authorities nabbed the alleged master hacker behind the
Blackhole malware kit last week, they sent a shockwave through the
digital underground. As soon as news spread that Blackhole's author,
known as "Paunch," and his partners had been arrested, the malware
apparently began to suffer. Blackhole, typically updated once or twice a
day, wasn't updated for four days.
