The Winter Olympics of Russia's Discontent (19:11)
The 1980 games "were quite interesting because Moscow was completely
cleaned up from any people who were deemed by the security services
potentially dangerous. All troublemakers or would-be troublemakers were
simply expelled from Moscow for the Olympic Games ... . People inside
the Russian secret services still think that this approach was very
effective, and we need to do something similar."

Today's Story Highlights

The Technology Wave You Never Saw Coming
Here in Silicon Valley we are currently worried about a major
transportation strike, and I doubt many on either side yet realize that
this is likely to accelerate the move to automate most of the related
jobs. There is little doubt the problem we are currently seeing here
will be virtually gone in a decade, but I doubt the workers will be very
happy with the solution.

Russia to Battle Thug Image With Patriotic Video Game
The Russian government plans to produce a patriotic video game to offset
the legions of games in which Russian soldiers are the villains. Russia
is also mulling a ban on foreign video games that it claims "distort
historical facts." Russia's culture ministry cited Company of Heroes as
particularly problematic: The plot depicts a World War II Russian
soldier as a criminal and arsonist.

Which Distro Is Best for Beginners?
Well it was a relatively quiet week here in the Linux blogosphere, where
all the code is strong and the UIs good-looking. Yes, we had the good
news about Tor and its NSA resistance, and yes, the Unu three-way gaming
device and the Lenovo Android laptop both generated some excitement of
their own. Truth be told, though, Linux fans have been overloaded with
good news lately.

Dragon's Lair App Lets You Relive Dirk's Glory
One of the amazing things about our new connected world of software
development and easy access to consumers is how old-school games can
find new life with entirely new audiences through iOS and OS X. Case in
point? The Dragon's Lair 30th Anniversary app for iOS. Dragon's Lair is
a really old arcade game. Seriously old, as in it was a laserdisc video
game. I barely remember laserdiscs.

Unu Plays 3 Ways to the Android Gaming Crowd
The Android gaming market is becoming increasingly crowded, but on
Thursday Sunflex announced a fresh contender: the Unu, a combination
console, tablet and home entertainment device that will arrive at retail
next month. The Unu offers the promise of bringing virtually any game
from Google Play to the living room TV via a TV-connected dock.
