The Secrets of GTA's Massive Mainstream Success (20:53)
It's not every day that a video game becomes a mainstream tech story.
Then again, it's not every day that a video game promptly records $1
billion in sales. Grand Theft Auto V did just that, however, eclipsing
the 10-figure mark three days after its Sept. 17 release. The game's
success is an emphatic declaration that the GTA brand -- first
introduced in 1997 -- is still going strong.

Today's Story Highlights

The Emergence of the Super-Smart Classroom
A teacher standing at the front of the room at a chalkboard is one of
the iconic images of education. Smartboards and other digital
technologies, however, are changing how classrooms are structured, how
teachers teach, and how students learn. "We're all about increasing
student engagement and achievement," said Neil Currie, director of
education marketing with SMART Technologies.

Cutting-Edge Specs Translate Languages on the Spot
Japanese NTT Docomo unveiled augmented reality glasses that are able to
translate menus and signs in real time. The company, which showed off
the device at a Japanese gadget fair, says the glasses will be ready
when foreigners descend on Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics. The glasses work
by overlaying someone's native language onto unfamiliar text.

Coverity's Zack Samocha: Software Quality and the Open Advantage
Software quality is a topic close to most developers' hearts, whether
they work with open source or proprietary code. Assessing quality,
however, isn't always a simple matter. As a result, several efforts have
sprung up to tackle the challenge, including the Coverity Scan project.
Coverity began work in 2006 on the open source project, which is a joint
endeavor with the Department of Homeland Security.

Text Extractor Yanks Aching PDF Problem
Nobody likes shuffling through paper documents to do research on
anything. Even if you have a big desk, its surface can get cluttered
quickly. That's why PDFs are so alluring. Adobe's cross-platform file
format provides a convenient way to turn paper documents into more
manageable digital ones. There's a hangup, however. Some PDFs are more
like picture files than word processing documents.

Valve Releases Steam Controller
Valve Software has announced the Steam Controller, the third part of its
trio of initiatives designed to bring Linux-based gaming to the living
room. Valve dubbed the controller "a different kind of gamepad." It
features dual circulator trackpads driven by the player's thumbs. Each
has a high-resolution haptic pad at its base, which is clickable,
allowing the entire surface to act as a button.
