Someone to Watch Over You: London's Recycling-Bin Spies
In June, Renew London equipped a dozen recycling bins in England's
capital city with technology to track people's smartphones as they
milled about the city. The devices went largely unnoticed until the
appearance of an August article entitled, "This recycling bin is
following you." The piece set off a bit of a media storm as people
realized their every move was suddenly capable of being scrutinized and
stored away.

Today's Story Highlights
Amazon's MatchBook to Spark Kindle Sales
Amazon on Wednesday introduced a new version of its Kindle Paperwhite
dedicated e-reader, on the heels of its announcement of Kindle
MatchBook, a new service that lets customers buy deeply discounted
electronic versions of print books they've purchased from the company.
The Paperwhite's display is its distinguishing feature, and the new
version has even sharper contrast than its predecessor.

How to Repair a Broken Screen on a Tablet or Phone
Breaking the screen on your mobile device doesn't have to mean a brand
new, expensive bit of kit. It's actually quite easy, and cheap, to
replace the glass once you get the hang of it. A tablet touchscreen can
cost about $50 if you perform the work. I've replaced a few touchscreens
on my roughly handled devices and found that tablet and phone
construction both rely on the same basic concepts.

Apple Schedules Dog and Pony Show in Beijing
Apple has invited Chinese journalists to a Sept. 11 event in Beijing to
announce... well, no one really knows, but it could be a big deal. One
of the likelier reasons for the Beijing event -- set to kick off mere
hours after the company is expected to unveil its new iPhone in the U.S.
-- would seem to be the introduction of a new, lower-end iPhone, which
would seem to be designed with Chinese consumers in mind.

Tiny CuBox-i Plays Nice With Linux and Android
Aiming to capture a piece of the market that has given the Raspberry Pi
such a warm reception, SolidRun on Wednesday announced a new tiny
computer of its own dubbed the "CuBox-i." Available in four models with
prices starting at $45, the tiny computer includes an OpenGL|ES 2.0 GPU
with OpenCL 1.1 embedded profile support; and up to four i.MX6 Cortex A9
ARM processors with as much as 1.2GHz each.

Samsung Draws a Big 'Meh' for Clunky, Pricey Galaxy Gear Smartwatch
Samsung on Wednesday showed off its much-anticipated Galaxy Gear
smartwatch at the IFA consumer show in Berlin. The device serves as an
ancillary to a user's Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, both
also unveiled at IFA on Wednesday. Both these devices run Android 4.3,
which support the Bluetooth Low Energy standard. Priced at $300, the
Galaxy Gear will be available in the U.S. in October.
