Today's Story Highlights

LG Grabs Spotlight With G2 Launch
LG -- the other major Korean smartphone maker -- on Wednesday unveiled
its G2 device in New York, in what might be construed as an attempt to
pip Samsung, which is slated to unveil its Galaxy Note III phablet on
Sept. 4 in Berlin. "The most innovative aspect is the design," LG CEO
Jong-Seok Park told a packed audience at the launch, which is based on
"thousands of hours" of observation of smartphone users.

Volt's $5K Cut May Not Be Enough to Goose Sales
Consumers with an itch for a hybrid car can now spend less scratch for
one. Chevy announced Tuesday that the 2014 models of its Volt plug-in
hybrid vehicle will carry a sticker price of $34,995, down $5,000 from
the current model. A federal tax credit of up to $7,500 for some buyers
of green vehicles could drop the price further. "We have made great
strides in reducing costs," said VP Don Johnson.

Samsung Kicks Its Smartwatch Plans Into Gear
The buzz about Samsung's plans for a smartwatch has intensified with the
discovery of trademark and patent filings in the United States and
Korea. The USPTO filing lists the name of the patented device as
"Samsung Galaxy Gear" and essentially describes a smartwatch. A document
filed in Korea includes line drawings of what appears to be a wristwatch
with a circular bracelet or wristband.

In Vitro Beef: It's What's for Dinner?
Scientists unveiled the world's first lab-grown hamburger at a press
event in London on Monday, showcasing a patty made from stem cells -- a
technique that could help alleviate the growing demand for more
sustainable beef products. Mark Post, a scientist at Maastricht
University, spent about two years developing the process for making in
vitro meat products.
