Why Oslo Is Off-Limits to Apple's Aerial Photographers
Apple's taken plenty of flak for its mapping system, and some of it is
well-deserved. After all, the maps have erroneously led drivers into the
middle of nowhere and shown buildings that appear as though they're
melting. Don't blame Apple if its images of Oslo, Norway, aren't
crystal-clear, however. That one's not on Apple. Norway has denied Apple
the license required to take aerial photos of Oslo.

Today's Story Highlights

Foursquare, Win 8 Make Each Other Look Good
Foursquare has released a new Windows 8 app in the Windows store that
promises dividends for both Microsoft and the social network itself. The
benefit for Microsoft is the extra traffic and exposure a new app for a
still-popular social network like Foursquare can deliver -- especially
an app that has been designed from the ground up for Windows 8.

How to Survey a Home for Internet Interference
The WiFi network you have in your home distributes Internet bandwidth
using radio signals. It's the same technology that FM radio, smartphones
and television rabbit-ears use -- and it's susceptible to the same kind
of problems, like interference, penetration and range. If you're having
Internet bandwidth problems at home -- buffering on YouTube, say --
there are simple ways to improve performance.

The Top 8 Features of iOS 7 That Actually Matter
One of the best things about Apple's iOS machine is how it churns out a
new release every year that packs new features that most every old
iPhone or iPad can use. Upgrades. You can count on something new from
Apple even when you're not standing in line to buy a shiny new iPhone 5S
or 5C. Other manufacturers push out updates too, but none are as good at
it as Apple.

FOSS Devs' Biggest Complaints: Documentation and Licensing
Open source software may hold considerable appeal for software
developers around the world, but that doesn't mean it's without its
aggravations. While no one aspect qualifies as the ultimate reason to
oppose writing or using open source code, a significant number of
programmers report that poor documentation and problems interpreting
licenses rank high on their list of grievances.

My Wish Is Your Command: Scientists Make Imperius Curse Real
It sounds like something out of science fiction: One person thinks about
pressing the spacebar on a keyboard to fire a cannon in a video game,
and another person across campus is compelled to press the spacebar for
real, even though he doesn't see the game on-screen. It's essentially
that very scenario, however, that scientists at the University of
Washington recently achieved.

Syrian Electronic Army Nails NYT
The pro-government Syrian Electronic Army on Tuesday hijacked The New
York Times' website and briefly took over Twitter's domain name system
servers. The SEA's main motive is to gain visibility for its cause, said
Jaeson Schultz, a Cisco threat research engineer. "They have claimed on
their website that the portrayal of events in Syria ... is inaccurate."
