Today's Story Highlights
Apple May Have a Rainbow of Retina-Display Minis Under Wraps
The next iPad mini, expected to debut in the December quarter, may have
a high-resolution display and come in an assortment of colors other than
black and white. The switch to Apple's famous Retina screen would bring
the next-gen mini in line with the company's other iOS products -- and
this isn't the first hint that Apple may be adding more color to its iOS
line.

Dolling Up for High-Tech Child's Play
Barbie's gone digital. She's wearing a new dress outfitted with
programmable LED lights that let her change her look on a whim. "Today's
girl is tech-savvy, and we created a Barbie doll that utilizes
technology to provide a new way to play with Barbie," said Mattel.
"Girls will like this doll because it allows them to be creative and tap
into their inner fashion designer."

Zeebox Serves as Tonto to Second-Screen Lone Rangers
If you read my columns regularly, you'll know that I'm a second-screen
proponent. For those unfamiliar with the dual-screen concept, it
suggests that tablet or phone often accompanies big-screen television
watching, resting on the viewer's knee and acting as a two-way,
interactive, Internet-connected screen. Where the concept breaks down,
however, is that no one really knows how second screens are used.

GPS Spoof Nudges Ocean-Faring Yacht Off Course
A team of researchers used a custom-built GPS device to send counterfeit
signals to a 213-foot yacht, forcing the $80 million vessel off its
course without triggering any alarms. The spoofed yacht was part of the
experiment, so no harm was inflicted on the vehicle or its passengers.
However, the test highlights the need for a broader understanding of
navigational attacks, researchers said.

Moto X Launches a Rainbow of DIY Phone Possibilities
Motorola on Thursday unveiled its Moto X sensor-laden smartphone at
meetings with the media and analysts in New York. As expected, the
device is chock-full of sensors and is controlled directly by voice.
"You can stand on the other side of the room and say, 'OK Google Now'
and it responds," said Ramon Llamas, a research manager at IDC. "This is
Siri on steroids."
