Sorting Out the Big Data Myths (43:24)
Debunking myths around Big Data should be a first step to making better
business decisions for improving data analysis and data management
capabilities in a company. As the volume and purpose of data and
business intelligence has dramatically shifted, older notions and
misconceptions -- what amount to myths about data infrastructure -- need
to updated and corrected, too.

Today's Story Highlights
Hackers Breach Dalai Lama's Government-in-Exile Website
Hackers have hit the website of the Central Tibetan Administration, the
Tibetan government-in-exile established by the Dalai Lama in 1959 after
he was forced out of Tibet, according to Kaspersky Lab Senior Security
Researcher Kurt Baumgartner. They installed some code that redirects
visitors from Chinese-language websites to a Java exploit that drops a
backdoor into their PCs.

Netrunner Sprints Ahead of the Linux Distro Pack
"Enigma" may be the nickname of the latest release of the Netrunner
Linux distro, but there's actually nothing enigmatic about it. In fact,
Netrunner 13.06 -- also known as "Netrunner 5" -- delivers one of the
most satisfying out-of-the-box desktop experiences I have had in quite
some time. I spend an inordinate amount of time testing and using
different Linux distributions.

Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, It's Off to the Asteroid Mines We Go?
Researchers in the UK recently identified 12 small asteroids close
enough to Earth to be used in mining operations that could begin as
early as 2021. The research was part of a larger effort by both private
and public institutions to learn more about the potential for tapping
into asteroids that could contain large deposits of valuable resources
including platinum, iron-nickel ore or gold.

Poor Patch Management Makes CMSes Low-Hanging Fruit for Hackers
Content management systems like WordPress and Joombla have become
popular targets for hackers in recent times because flaws in those
systems can be leveraged for mischief across literally millions of
websites. WordPress is running on some 73 million websites and Joomla
some 35 million, so if you're a cybercriminal with a fresh vulnerability
in your satchel, you can do some serious damage.
