Today's Story Highlights

SmugMug Gives Its Artists a New Palette
For the first time in more than a decade, SmugMug has given itself a
major facelift. The new look for the image watering hole comes a scant
two months after Flickr, another picture Web oasis, overhauled its Web
presence -- a move that received mixed reviews. Through its redesign,
SmugMug aims to give the site a cleaner and more modern look. It's also
pledging better cross-platform performance.

Mozilla, BlackBerry Team Up on Peach Fuzzing
Politics may make for strange bedfellows, but there's no comparison to
the match-ups that occur in the business world. Consider this: Mozilla,
which has been flexing its muscles of late and pushing into the
smartphone business and foreign markets, has teamed up with the flailing
and failing BlackBerry, which is hemorrhaging market share, to conduct
research on bugs in browsers.

Chinese Video Game Simulates Real-World Island Dispute
Glorious Mission Online , a first-person shooting game launched in China
and codeveloped by the People's Liberation Army, lets gamers defeat
Japan in the fake quest to take back real islands. The game includes the
real-life plot in which China and Japan fight over the Diaoyu/Senkaku
Islands, which sit in the East China Sea and have prompted territorial
skirmishes.

How to Get Windows 8.1 on Your PC Now
It's no secret that Windows 8 has met with only a lukewarm reception,
but life in the tech world moves quickly, and now Windows 8.1 is on the
way. If you've installed Windows 8, it's worth downloading the recently
released free preview version of Windows 8.1. By doing so, you will be
able to take advantage of the updated OS's personalization and services
improvements.

The iPhone 5C Is Shaping Up to Be the Scariest Product Apple Ever
As I follow the rumor mill surrounding the fabled low-cost iPhone, aka
"cheap iPhone," and more recently, "iPhone 5C," I'm starting to get
worried. What's wrong with me? Isn't an inexpensive iPhone important to
help Apple fight freaky robot things threatening to take over the world?
There's nothing out-of-the-ordinary wrong with me, but there's a problem
with the iPhone 5C.

Android's Crazy-Quilt Syndrome
There's no question that Android is fragmented. OpenSignal has counted
nearly 11,900 distinct Android devices so far this year, compared with
fewer than 4,000 last year. OpenSignal's visual representations of the
number of devices and the brands are a welter of shapes and colors.
Think crazy quilts sewn by demented craftspeople inhaling non-tobacco
substances.

UK Archbishop Kicks Over Lender's Table, Starts Own Biz
Not for the first time, Justin Welby, the head of the Church of England
and the archbishop of Canterbury, took a jab at UK-based online lender
Wonga, claiming he told Wonga's CEO, "we're trying to compete you out of
existence." The Church of England is in the process of forming its own
quasi-lending agency -- the "Anglican Mutual Credit Union" -- for clergy
and employees.
