Power to the Wiki-People (14:41)
The conflict that erupted between French intelligence authorities and
the Wikimedia Foundation over its refusal to remove a "sensitive"
Wikipedia page goes right to the heart of free expression, says Geoffrey
Brigham, the foundation's general counsel. Decisions on takedown
requests are based less on filing the right paperwork or adhering to a
particular country's laws than on the Wikipedia community's principles.

Today's Story Highlights
Yahoo Weather, Email Mobile Apps Aim for Elegance
Yahoo last week unfurled two new apps that should help strengthen its
mobile bona fides: the Yahoo Weather App for iPhone, iPod and iPod
touch; and Yahoo Mail Apps for iPad and Android tablets. The new
releases are in keeping with CEO Marissa Mayer's intention to pare
Yahoo's extensive mobile portfolio to a handful of strong, user-friendly
and productivity-oriented apps. Both are streamlined, and both deliver
on Mayer's promise.

Schmidt on Google's UK Taxes: This Is How It's Done
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt defended the company's tax
practices in the United Kingdom, where Google and a handful of other
U.S. tech companies have been chastised for not paying enough taxes.
Google paid just over $9 million in UK taxes in 2011, despite hundreds
of millions in turnover. The company was able to pull this off by
operating out of Ireland, which has a much lower tax rate.

Social Sharing May Be Eroding Office Security
It's no secret that security experts don't have a lot of love for social
media. Information freely available at social media sites makes it
easier for net marauders to fashion targeted attacks on organizations.
However, social media may be undermining data security in a more
profound way. Much has been made of the growing willingness of people
to cough up personal information about themselves.

Magellan SmartGPS Does the Cloud Right
With smartphones and an increasing number of tablets becoming GPS-
capable, it is easy to write off dedicated GPS players. So many seem
stuck in the past -- days when devices needed a wired connection for
updates and didn't seem to be aware of Web services they might be ideal
for, like Yelp. I think it is time to revisit the dedicated GPS player,
and I'll use the Magellan SmartGPS as an example of the current best of
class.

Farewell, Fuduntu: The Untimely Demise of a Winning Linux Distro
Last Monday delivered both death and taxes. April 15 was not only the
day U.S. taxes were due, but also the day two bombs exploded at the
Boston Marathon. The magnitude of that tragedy is far beyond the scope
of this column, of course, but Monday also brought a casualty -- albeit
on a much smaller scale -- to those of us here in the Linux world. It
wasn't a human death, fortunately.

Cloud Drive May Stoke Amazon Fans - for Others It's 'Meh'
When Amazon updated its Cloud Drive earlier this month with file syncing
built in -- along with its desktop app for the Mac -- the file storage
service suddenly got a lot more interesting. Why? For long-term file
storage, syncing isn't that big of a deal. However, if you want a place
to dump files that you can access from another computer or via a Web
browser, the no-brainer need is for automatic syncing.

Provo Is Next Stop on the Google Fiber Express
One week after the announcement that the Google Fiber network would come
to Austin, Texas, Provo found out it will be the third city to get the
search company's gigabit high-speed service. The Utah city, home to a
much-criticized, money-losing fiber optic network, will sell it to
Google for $1. The announcement means the company will eventually
provide the city with Internet service that is 100 times faster.

Tech Tools Aid Boston Bomber Manhunt
The Boston suburbs were in lockdown on Friday, following a deadly
shootout Thursday night with two men suspected of setting off bombs at
the Boston Marathon on Monday. One of the suspects was fatally wounded;
the other is on the run. Boston closed its schools and its
transportation system, and urged businesses to shut their doors in order
to catch the fugitive, identified by the FBI as 19-year-old Dzhokar
Tsarnaev.
