Online Gambling: The WTO Loads Antigua's Slingshot (34:08 min.)
The WTO ruling that lets Antigua suspend U.S. copyright law has its
roots in the birth of online gambling. It quickly became a major part of
the Antiguan economy, but dried up after the U.S. pulled the plug on its
agreement with the island nation. The WTO ruling gives Antigua a new
card to play: the threat of opening the floodgates on U.S. copyrighted
content.

Today's Story Highlights

NYT Hack Shows Gaping Holes in Traditional Security Systems
After The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal revealed last week
that their systems had been compromised by Chinese hackers, the Journal
reported that the FBI has been probing attacks on U.S. media -- part of
a long-running pattern by a "foreign entity" to compromise security at
major U.S. companies -- for more than a year.

Apple Going After Alleged iOS Abuser
Apple reportedly has launched an investigation into Qihoo, a giant
Chinese software company and search engine, based on concerns the app
maker is violating terms of service. Apple is also concerned that Qihoo
is encouraging jailbreaking iPhones by delivering apps as single file
downloads compatible with unlocked Apple products.

Alicia Keys: The Next Steve Jobs?
What folks who haven't read any of the early Steve Jobs biographies
don't know is that Steve Jobs -- at least, the way he was seen in public
-- wasn't any more real than Ronald McDonald. He was a creation of
Apple's advertising agency that successfully reformed Steve into the
near-superhuman person we saw on stage.

Microsoft Office and the Big Subscription Bet
Well it's been another wild week here in the Linux blogosphere, what
with all the ruckus emanating out of the bordering Redmond territories.
Much like what happened last fall when Windows 8 made its fanfare-filled
debut, the launch of Office 2013 and 365 last Tuesday left more than a
few Linux bloggers with a ringing in the ears that didn't abate for
days.

Little Inferno Gleefully Ignites the Deep Dark Pyro Within
From what I've seen of humanity, there's a little pyro locked inside
most of us. Maybe it's a universal longing to chase away the darkness
with warmth and light, or maybe it's just a genetic quirk coded into our
DNA from the days of the Ice Age when cooking up a wooly mammoth meant
survival. Or maybe we just really like to see things burn.

Netflix Rolls Out the Red Carpet for 'House of Cards'
Netflix on Friday made the premiere episode of House of Cards , its in-
house political drama, available free for one month to the public with
no membership requirement. It is also offering subscribers the entire 13
episodes of the first season at one time instead of parceling out each
episode weekly.

CEA Bashes CBS as It Shows Cnet the Door
The Consumer Electronics Association had its say Thursday in a simmering
controversy related to its Best of CES awards and announced it was
dropping Cnet as its partner. The CEA also gave Dish Network's Hopper
with Sling DVR its Best of Show prize. Cnet editors originally selected
the Hopper for the top honor before its corporate parent, CBS, brought
pressure to bear.

Sony Poised to Fire Next Shot in Next-Gen Console Wars
Sony issued an invite Thursday to an event on Feb. 20 that could give
gamers their first glimpse at the PlayStation 4, the company's next-
generation console to go head-to-head against Nintendo's Wii U and
whatever Microsoft unveils later this year. Sony had previously hinted
that it would provide PS4 details in advance of this year's Electronic
Entertainment Expo trade show in Los Angeles in June.
