New mobile OS, Ubuntu Touch, holds plenty potential

Ubuntu OS wins Best in Show

The international expo about all things mobile, also known as Mobile World Congress, wrapped up today in Barcelona, Spain. Plenty of notable handsets were unveiled during the week, including the Asus PadFone, an LTE smartphone that can be docked and "transformed" into a 10.1-inch tablet. But what really impressed us was the elegant and intuitive new mobile OS, Ubuntu Touch. Though its developer, Canonical, is still in talks with manufacturers and carriers, you can preview it on current Nexus devices before its slated October release. Sony Xperia Tablet Z

Announced for U.S. and European markets, the Xperia Tablet Z is a waterproof 10.1-inch tablet and features a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor. It's Sony's third large-form Android tablet in two years and it's equipped with an 8-megapixel camera, Android Jelly Bean, and NFC.

LG Optimus G Pro

LG is trying its hand at the "phablet" market again with the Optimus G Pro. The phone sports a massive 5.5-inch display that features the more common 16:9 aspect ratio and a 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution. It will arrive in North America in the second quarter.

Nokia Lumia 720

Of the four new handsets Nokia introduced at MWC, the Lumia 720 is by far the most high-end. The Windows Phone 8 device has a 4.3-inch LCD display that has a ClearBlack filter that reduces outdoor glare and is highly sensitive so that it can still respond to your gestures, even if you're wearing gloves.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2

The Xcover 2 is dust-proof and waterproof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. But just because it has an uncompromising exterior, it doesn't make compromises on the inside. It has a chunky dual-core 1GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and a 4-inch screen.

Huawei Ascend P2

The Ascend P2 is Huawei's next step in its mission to advance its Android presence worldwide. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, with Huawei's Emotion UI on top. It features a 4.7-inch, 720p HD display with a 315-pixel density and promises high contrast for outdoor legibility and an 85-degree viewing angle.
