Posted: 26 May 2014 02:41 AM PDT Samsung supremo Lee Kun-hee has woken up from his coma, a fortnight after he suffered a heart attack after his family made a bit of noise in his sick room. Apparently bored family members were watching a baseball game while visiting, and were "making noise" when Samsung Lions hitter Lee Seung-yeop hit a home run. This woke Lee up from his coma which should indicate they made a bit of noise. Lee has been under treatment at the Samsung Medical Centre in southern Seoul, where he had initially been treated in intensive care before being shifted to a ward. The hospital says the prognosis for his cognitive functions is "hopeful." The 72 year old was hospitalised on May 11. He has limited involvement with the firm these days, and the Korea Herald reports that the company's share price has risen on expectations that it will expedite "managerial succession to Lee's children." This means that Lee Jay-yong, Lee's only son, would find himself in charge of an industrial giant which represents a quarter of South Korea's GDP.
Pirate Party suffers in Euro elections Posted: 26 May 2014 02:38 AM PDT It appears that Europeans were too busy voting for neo-Nazis and Daily Mail pin-up candidates in the European elections to care about the internet. The Pirate Party, which had been making gains as a political force, were suddenly given a trashing of the weekend. Sweden's two Pirate Party European Members of Parliament have not been re-elected and their vote collapsed to 2.2 percent, down from 2009's 7.1 percent. In Finland, where Pirate Bay founder Peter Sunde sought a seat, the Party secured just 0.7 per cent of the vote. The UK's three Pirate candidates appear to have collectively won fewer than 10,000 votes. In Germany they only picked up .4 percent. The only place that the Pirates did well was in the Czech Republic where they polled 4.78 percent of the vote, but that was not enough to secure a seat. What the Pirates should have done is blamed all the world's problems on Romanians and the EU and then it might have attracted more support.
Washington to ban Chinese hackers from Defcon Posted: 26 May 2014 02:36 AM PDT In a stonking stroke of hypocrisy the US government is banning Chinese hackers from attending Def Con and Black Hat in Las Vegas. The US said that it is considering using visa restrictions to prevent Chinese nationals from attending popular summer hacking fests to curb Chinese cyber espionage. It seems that the US thinks that if people concentrate on Chinese hacking efforts, it will forget about its own programmes which make anything Bejing does look slightly anaemic. The United States has charged five Chinese military officers with hacking into US companies to steal trade secrets. China has denied the charges, saying they were "made up". Organisers of the two conferences said that limiting participation from China was a bad idea. Chris Wysopal, a Black Hat review board member, pointed out that restricting access would have little impact as hacking talks from both conferences are videotaped and sold on DVDs or posted on the web. Others have pointed out that it is racism and in any event the Chinese hackers who turn over US government sites don't go to Defcon. In fact there are few Chinese nationals who are going to speak at either conference. At Black Hat, an employee of Chinese security software maker Qihoo 360 is scheduled to speak on software vulnerabilities while two researchers with Chinese University of Hong Kong are set to talk on hacking social media. Def Con does not have any Chinese nationals speaking. The only way that the government is going to be stopping Chinese nationals from attending as conference members is by stopping all Chinese from going to Los Vegas for the duration of the conference.
Apple has another crack at a product ban Posted: 26 May 2014 02:34 AM PDT The fruity cargo cult Apple is trying to get its rival Samsung banned from the US again. The move follows a jury verdict that Samsung Electronics infringed three of its patents. Apple is seeking a US sales ban on some older models of the South Korean company's smartphones. The nine devices targeted by Apple for a US sales ban include the Admire, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S3 and Stratosphere. Apple, which on May 2 won $120 million of the $2.2 billion it sought, identified nine devices it wants barred in a May 23 filing with US District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California. Of course Apple is unlikely to win the ban. Koh has twice rejected the iPhone-maker's requests. To make matters worse the jury also concluded that Apple infringed one of Samsung's patents and the Galaxy-maker has not yet requested a ban of Apple gear. Both sides are now facing the fall out of plummeting global smartphone shipments. Samsung sales fell 31 percent from 32 percent a year earlier, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple's share fell to about 15 percent from almost 18 percent in the same period, while Chinese producers such as Huawei and Xiaomi have been making gains.
Posted: 26 May 2014 02:33 AM PDT The success of the SteamOS Linux distribution is revealing that AMD is going to get a kicking in the future and it just cannot see it. For a decade it would have been fair enough for a consumer chipmaker to ignore Linux. All those who said <insert this year> will be the year of Linux on the desktop were usually greeted with much mockery. While 2014 is not the year that Linux will take control of the desktop either, the writing is appearing on the wall and it is silly for AMD to ignore it. SteamOS users are suffering from a lack of proper AMD driver support and it is taking ages for anyone to get games on the OS running. Valve used Nvidia and Intel hardware, with the promise that AMD support will arrive later, however no one seems to be in a rush. AMD support for Linux is pants and there is no reasonable OpenGL support. Moreover AMD is unwilling to expand the drivers. Nvidia is doing well at working with game developers and Valve and is even bringing in new features like overclocking. AMD drivers just fix some problems with the software. So why is AMD providing rubbish support for those who snub Windows? By refusing to see how things are going with Valve, they are ignoring the way that the industry is headed and in the long term it is going to suffer for its mistake. Users who want to get the most out of their Steam box will buy an Nvidia and Intel combo, not because they want to, but because AMD will have such a bad reputation. What is important to realise here is that gamers have been AMD's bread and butter for a while. The fact they want to change their operating system should make no difference to the chipmaker, but the fact is that it does.
