Everybody Loves Data Protection (19:53)
In early June, the EU agreed to a "business-friendly" privacy proposal,
but that did nothing to stop the privacy debate in Europe. Since then, a
federal court in Germany held Google liable for autocomplete
suggestions; France threatened to fine Google unless it changed its
ways; and an advisor to the European court of Justice allowed Google to
keep sensitive information in its search index.

Today's Story Highlights

Teen's Bright Idea: Flashlight Powered by Body Heat
A flashlight that ditches the batteries in favor of body heat is one of
the finalists in Google's 2013 Science Fair. Ann Makosinski, 15-year-old
Canadian student, created the device, which harvests energy from the
human hand to power itself. Makosinski created a prototype using Petier
tiles she bought on eBay, which produce electricity when one side is
heated and the other cool.

Apple to Build Solar Farm to Power Huge New Data Center
Apple, which has a mixed history on environmental issues, will build a
solar farm to power its data center in Washoe County, Nev. "SunPower is
working with Apple to design and build this project," said Ingrid
Ekstrom, spokesperson for SunPower. "We will be building a SunPower C7
Tracker system at the site." The farm will reportedly generate 20 MW of
electricity.

Guayadeque Music Player's an Impressive Featherweight
Music management programs for Linux often leave me wanting more -- more
flexibility, more file type options, more friendliness towards large
song collections, etc. Guayadeque, on the other hand, is a music player
that proves that less can be more. Guayadeque is light on system
resources but still manages to offer much more in the way of useful
features.

Console Wars 2013: The Heavyweights Go Head-to-Head
The battle of the video game consoles has been going on for some time
already, but this year it promises to reach new heights. Longstanding
competitors Sony and Microsoft are both expected to release brand-new
consoles in November, meaning holiday shoppers will have to make some
difficult decisions. From a technical standpoint, the consoles are
fairly comparable.

Rackspace Cloud to Power Particle-Smashing Physics at CERN
Open cloud provider Rackspace has entered into a yearlong contributor
agreement with CERN openlab whereby it will deliver a hybrid cloud
solution based on OpenStack to help CERN research the origins of the
universe, the company announced on Monday. CERN openlab provides a
framework for testing and validating information technologies and
services in partnership with industry at CERN.
