Everybody Loves Data Protection (19:53)
In early June, the EU agreed to a "business-friendly" privacy proposal,
but that did nothing to stop the privacy debate in Europe. Since then, a
federal court in Germany held Google liable for autocomplete
suggestions; France threatened to fine Google unless it changed its
ways; and an advisor to the European court of Justice allowed Google to
keep sensitive information in its search index.

Pocket Spacecraft Wants to Fly You to the Moon
Pocket Spacecraft is offering ordinary people the opportunity to track
and personalize their own tiny spacecrafts on a journey to the moon.
Pocket Spacecraft is hoping to raise about $440,000 via its Kickstarter
campaign to finance a mission that would send small polyimide discs
called "Scouts" aboard a larger spacecraft, the Interplanetary CubeSat
mothership, into space.

Ulysses III Banishes Word-Processing Bloat
During the fledgling era of word processing, developers divided into two
camps over formatting documents. Software makers like Xywrite believed
formatting and composition should be distinct. They designed their word
crunchers to have two modes -- one for writing, another for formatting a
document. Other programming outfits, like Microsoft, favored the "what
you see is what you get" approach.

Concurrent's Chris Wensel: The Open Source Path Is a Rocky Road
Big Data and open source software may be the next great unholy alliance
in computing's current promised land, but open source is a broken
business model that needs a better vehicle for supporting projects such
as programming suites that build database applications. So argues Chris
Wensel, founder and CTO of Concurrent. Wensel started the company in
2008 to focus on the open-source Cascading Project.

The Strain in Spain Could Help Firefox OS Take Root
The ZTE Open -- the first commercially available smartphone running
Mozilla's Firefox OS -- will be launched in Spain Tuesday by Telefonica.
It will be available for about $90, with prepaid customers getting a
balance of roughly $40 worth of phone calls. Telefonica will launch
Firefox OS smartphones in Colombia and Venezuela soon, and will unveil
other Firefox OS devices later this year.

RSS Rises From Google Reader's Ashes
Procrastinators may have been surprised Monday when they tried to catch
up on their news feeds by using their old dependable Google Reader only
to find out it was gone. That's right -- Google has shut down its RSS
aggregator for good. It's too late to save your Reader data, but you can
still go through the laborious task of reconstructing your news feeds
from scratch in a Reader alternative.
